A Rare Treasure - The Siberian Cat

Siberian Cats, occasionally referred to as the Siberian Forest Cat, are a natural breed and reflect the climate in which they developed.  Not surprisingly, they are considered a Russian national treasure.  They've been documented in Russia for hundreds of years. They are apart of many Russian fairy tails and found in children's books.

Siberians are known for their loyal, loving personalities and funny antics.  They make wonderful companions to adults, children, dogs, and other family pets.  They truly do connect with their owners and are often drawn to the person that needs their attention.  Siberians like to play in water.  They are known to dip their toes and wash their toys in their water bowl or perhaps your tub.  While they are a relatively quiet breed, they often express themselves through trills, chirps and purring.

The Siberian is to have a sweet expression with large round eyes.  They are a medium to large sized cat with a lush medium length coat and a deep ruff, setting of the head.  Their head is described as a modified wedge with rounded contours, broad at the top, gently narrowing to a slightly rounded muzzle and nicely rounded chin.  Their ears are softly rounded at the tip with a somewhat wide base.  When it comes to their ears, Lynx tipping is most desirable.  They also have beautiful inner ear tufts that extend out beyond the ear itself.  Their legs are medium length with large rounded paws and soft toe tufts.  They have full fluffy britches on their hind quarters and a beautiful bushy tail.  Overall, the Siberian Cats appearance should be one of strength, balance, power and alertness.

The Siberian breed can take up to five years to be fully mature, with females generally being 8 to 12 pounds and males ranging from 10 to 16 pounds, with some being even larger.  Traditional Siberians eyes vary in color from gold to green and all shades in between.  The Color Point Siberian, occasionally referred to as the Neva Masquerade, have beautiful blue eyes.  The Siberians dense triple coat is made up of, an outer coat, middle coat and soft downy undercoat.  This gorgeous and quite useful coat is water repellent and comes in many colors, with and without white markings.  While their coat tends to remain relatively tangle- free, they do shed.  Brushing your Siberian weekly will help to collect lose hair and maintain their coat.  Extra brushing may be needed in the spring as they shed out their winter coat.
